Teacher Resources & Education
Eight public schools within the Blackfoot watershed serve over 700 students from Lincoln, Ovando, Helmville, Seeley Lake, Greenough, Potomac, and Bonner. Teachers working in the watershed play an invaluable role promoting resource education and land stewardship.
Teacher Steering Committee
This committee provides a key foundation to teacher and student natural resource education in the Blackfoot. With representatives from all schools in the watershed, the committee meets semi-annually to advise the Challenge on school education projects. Additionally, a monthly E-News is distributed to members providing local education opportunities, trainings, and other news.
Adopt-A-Trout
In partnership with MT Fish, Wildlife and Parks, each Blackfoot school has an opportunity to participate in the Adopt-A-Trout program. Students work with fisheries biologists to research trout and other species around Milltown Reservoir and up the Blackfoot River. The project includes field trips, plus adopting and tracking fish migration on a website. For more information see the Adopt-A-Trout website and the 2005 Project Summary. Teachers may also use the AAT Curriculum in the classroom.
Teacher Workshops & Training Opportunities
With teachers in the Blackfoot playing a key role in educating the landowners and managers of the future, the Challenge is committed to providing them with the resources and training they need. A two-day workshop is offered each year offering UM and OPI credits (see the 2006 Teacher Workshop Summary). Also, teachers are invited to a 2006 week-long training, June 12-16, entitled Experience the Blackfoot Watershed: A Field-Based Teacher Training Linking Ecology, Geology and History to the Classroom. For more details, see the attached 2006 Poster and Registration form.
Youth Field Day
The Blackfoot Challenge hosts an Annual Youth Field Day for 4th through 6th grade students across the watershed. Topics range from natural resource issues to community sustainability. The 2006 Youth Field Day will be held in late September and focus on Native American Education: Land Use and Stewardship in the Blackfoot. For more information on these events, see 2005 Youth Field Day and 2004 Youth Field Day summaries.
